2023 Strategic Foresight Report: Designing the future of the EU's socio-economic sustainability

On 13 February, the European Commission published a call for evidence for the 2023 Strategic Foresight Report. This report is published annually and informs of the Commission's initiatives and the review of existing policies. Moreover, it intends to anticipate trends, risks, emerging issues, and their potential implications and opportunities in order to draw useful insights for strategic planning, policy-making and preparedness.

These strategic foresight exercises involve a participative and cross-sectoral process by the relevant Commission departments in consultation with Member States, the interinstitutional network of foresight, and a range of stakeholders and civil society.

The 2023 edition aims to provide guidance on strategic decisions to be made to ensure that the EU remains socially and economically sustainable and develops a stronger global role in the coming decades. Its analysis and recommendations aim to:

  • strengthen Europe’s ability to achieve sustainability by 2050

  • bolster the EU's open strategic autonomy

  • boost the EU’s global leadership

The Commission invites stakeholders to provide comments on the questions mentioned in the consultation, namely what major challenges will need to be addressed to achieve a socially, economically and environmentally sustainable Europe by 2050.

The call for evidence is open until 13 March. Click here to access it.
