EUDR: Challenges in Complying with the European Deforestation Regulation

Like any complex legislation, the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) presents certain compliance challenges. The two primary obstacles companies face are:
Data Management
Several service providers have developed tools to help manage compliance data. These solutions can centralize information, facilitate data transfers to the EU database, and streamline distribution throughout the supply chain. While these tools are highly beneficial, their costs may deter some companies from adopting them.
Data Collection
Collecting accurate and reliable data is often even more challenging. How can importers be sure that a supplier’s documentation, sometimes originating from across the globe, is authentic and valid? This issue also concerns enforcement authorities, who must verify, for example, whether timber was legally harvested in accordance with national laws, proper licensing, and adherence to license conditions.
Despite ongoing efforts to compile national deforestation law databases, a comprehensive global legal database aligned with EUDR requirements does not yet exist. This absence complicates compliance for both importers and regulators.
Ultimately, the most effective approach lies with economic operators themselves. They are best positioned to obtain valid documentation and the relevant national legal references. When handled properly, this facilitates smoother inspections and ensures regulatory compliance.
With the compliance deadline set for 30 December, now is the time to act.
